Genetic control of ovulation rate and embryo survival in mice. II. Effects of crossing selected lines.

چکیده
ETEROSIS in characteristics which are part of the reproductive process is a commonly observed result of crossing unrelated stocks in many species (e.g., GOWEN 1952). In mammals, the observed heterosis in litter size could be due to superiority of the crossbred in ovulation rate, in embryo survival, or both. The second of these parameters can be further subdivided into preand postimplantation stages. If these components were found to exhibit different degrees of heterosis, the information could be used in developing more efficient animal crossbreeding programs. Such information would also contribute to a better understanding of the nature of the genetic control of litter size. Analyses by FALCONER and ROBERTS (19'60) of crosses of inbred lines of mice indicated that there was directional dominance of genes affecting preimplantation losses but not the other two components. BOSHIER (1968) obtained generally similar results. MCCARTHY (1967) on the other hand, concluded from an inbreeding experiment with a slightly different strain of mice from that used by FALCONER and ROBERTS that genes affecting ovulation rate as well as preimplantation losses showed directional dominance. Again, postimplantation losses appeared to be affected by genes acting additively. In swine, SQUIERS, DICKERSON and MAYER (1952) reported that ovulation rate and embryo mortality, primarily preimplantation but including a small proportion of early postimplantation losses, both showed heterosis or evidence of directional dominance, with ovulation rate showing the greater effect of the two. KING and YOUNG (1957) reached the same conclusion from a comparison of inbred and outbred sows. In this paper we present the results of crossing lines of mice differing in ovulation rate and in embryo survival, as a result of artificial selection, and we suggest that embryo survival, particularly at the preimplantation stage, exhibits more heterosis than does ovulation rate.

Ovulation rate, lambing rate, litter size and embryo survival of Rambouillet sheep selected for high and low reproductive rate.
Ewes from lines selected for high and low reproductive rate and a control line bred and selected randomly were endoscopically examined 3 to 5 d after breeding to determine ovulation rates in the fall of 1985, 1986 and 1987. Fertility (ewes lambing per ewe exposed), lambing rate (lambs born per ewe exposed) and litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) were evaluated at lambing in the spring of e...
متن کاملEstimates of genetic parameters for direct and maternal effects on embryonic survival in swine.
Survival of 16,838 potential embryos was determined by counting corpora lutea and fetuses at 50 d of gestation for 1,081 litters by 225 sires. These data, coded as 1 or 0 depending on whether an ovulation was represented by a fetus, were used to estimate direct and maternal additive genetic variances and their covariance for embryonic survival. Data were from first-parity gilts of a Large White...
متن کاملOvulation rate and pre- and postimplantation survival in mice with a major gene for rapid postweaning gain.
Differences in ovulation rate, embryo survival, litter size, and fertility are presented for four lines of mice that have been selected for growth or are homozygous for a recessive gene (hg) imparting rapid postweaning gain. Two of the lines were hg/hg, one in a growth-neutral and one in a growth-selected background. The remaining two were Hg/Hg (the corresponding normal, dominant allele with n...

متن کاملP-125: Assessment The Effect of Equisetum Arvense Alcoholic Extract on IVF Rate, Embryo Quality and Development in STZ-Induced Diabetic Female Mice
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic circumstance characterized by high blood glucose level and partial or absolute impairment of insulin secretion. Diabetes in females leads to sexual disorders such as loss of libido, low ovulation rate and disorder in oocyte maturation. Therefore the current study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of Equisetum arvense alcoholic ext...
